Homage to Gradient - WIP by sanosoke Homage to Gradient - WIP by sanosoke
This is a Homage to the great artist Gradient, for many reasons. I have gotten inspiration on this piece for both the POV and sky, but I also used a technique that he gave in the hints thread for rendering the sky later, which really was helpful here.
It is a work in progress, because I'd really like to make this better, and fine tune things, so all advice is really welcome.

Thanks for Mayday for her terrain and Overlay.

first of all great wonderous sand and grass blend. Was that and overlay that got those ripples in the sand? Me want...so cool
As for ideas...it doesn't look like the cliffs have an overlay, if not I have a good one for it called grey rock.[link] I uploaded a scrap for u to see it. Gives the look of deep weather rock. The cliffs look a bit too smooth.
Maybe try clear shallow water with opacity. I use white for the color. It works out nicely.
The grass is wonderfull, to get what u want, I suck at grass but some depth, maybe more bump or high mimic and layer thickness.
I dont think strata will work to well, maybe a little but it would distract from the focal point of the image which to me is that gorgeous sand and grass around the rock. Think of the cliffs as background work.
Any ways, fingers are tired, if u want the overlay send note, we do the scraps thing.
Cant wait to see the end result , "runs aways giggling" :blushes:

Thanks for the advice man. I think the overlay wouldn't work because the terrain here is vertical (and Overlays don't work on completely vertical surfaces)
I'm not sure if I agree with the water part. Plus, the render is long enough without water ;)

wow, this is cool:)

I really like the gradient effect on the sky, it adds alot of depth to the picture. The mountains look very realistic:)

Very nice so far. I'd love to see the finished piece.
The surface seems to glow. What sun brightness did you use? Do you usually use that level, or is this an exception? And how did you get half of the sky to be dark whilst the other half is clearly shining bright? It's a really neat effect.

As for critique, I'm not sure. As usual, I'm impressed by what you've done. I suppose it's kind of empty in the middle-left part of the picture, so if that's where you want to add anything in, it would probably fit well there. Perhaps those birds you often pop in. I'm not sure what else to suggest.

Nice surface colors, like usual, and very neat use of shadow. I almost expect to see stars in the upper right part, but that's supposed to be dark anyways, and cloud covered, I'm assuming, so I suppose not. Great work =)

Well, the sky lightness/darkness is partly due to the rays and some haze, but I also did some postwork to bring out the effect a little.
I think the stars thing is a no go for this piece, since most of the sky is clouds anyway and there's so much light shooting around, but maybe I'll think about birds. I had wanted to keep the motion of the image, which is why I left the left side so empty, but maybe you're right and I'll try to find something.
Cheers for the comment :)

I must say, at first I thought "Sweet God! Terragenic!! *spews*" But it grew on me, and I love it.

I love the composition, nice colour, not too bright or dull. The mountains look very fantasy like, but not completely unreal.

Well, it's only crap when people don't put effort into it. Maya is crap if people don't know what they're doing either. I still think TG is a good program when in the right hands, and I hope people will be not so quick to judge :)
Thank for the comment :)

here's a hint, surface, max-min height, coverage, maximum slope...
